I began the project “The Last Snow In Yardley Wood” because in the last 3 decades the amount of snowfall here in Birmingham had decreased significantly. We might get an overnight flurry which would be gone by afternoon the following day a couple of times during the winter. Based on this weather pattern I was convinced that some time in the not to distant future I would photograph the last snow in these parts. Then last year we had some snow that hung around for a while and this winter we have had a continuation from before Christmas. Today the snow was thick but even so I wouldn’t trust walking across the ice which we always did when I was a school kid, you can see the foot marks of someone who did but they returned to the bank after only a few yards, so the effects of climate change continue. To put into perspective the snow and cold is nothing compared to the pictures from my contacts that live in Canada and The North of England and Scotland. |
