“Abstracted Car (2009)”

“Abstracted Car (2009)”

This week we have had family visiting from Northern Ireland, as both my nephew and his girl friend are interested in the arts we spent the day keeping warm by visiting many art galleries in Birmingham. Here at the Ikon I was particularly interested in this piece “Abstracted Car (2009)” which is part of the “Shocked Into Abstraction” exhibition by the Norwegian artist Matias Faldbakken.

My art practice centers around the surfaces created from dumped burnt out cars. http://www.johngarghan.co.uk/AboutArt.html so I was delighted to obtain permission to photograph this piece as if it was one of my found “Burn Outs”. For once I was in a safe, clean environment and able to photograph underneath the car. I also found it exciting photographing the roof, bonnet and boot at angles to the metal that I could never achieve in the normal dumped locations. What I did miss was the changing sunlight which really makes a dramatic change to the contours of the metal and the ability to splash water over the surface which will enhance and liven a flat image
