I resisted the temptation to say “the end of an era” although some people in Birmingham would say so. The Costermonger is a well known rock music pub in the city centre and on Saturday 16 August 2009 it closed its doors for the final time ready for the bulldozers to flatten it and the surrounding market area, this part of the city needs to be redeveloped being a through back to the early 60s concrete jungle style, Birmingham has moved on and this part of the city is left behind. |
It all started in the early 70s, I was the first pub DJ to realise that the customers who went there were not into the disco and pop that was played at all the other venues in the city. With this USP Wednesday nights became popular and the rock format was extended to other nights, I stayed there for 11 years and shortly after I left in 1985 the brewery changed it into a theme rock pub |
So when Jon Bounds excellent blog Birmingham its Not Shit www.birminghamitsnotshit.co.uk/blog announced the Costermonger is Closing I knew I had a subject somewhere for my 365 photo. I met some old friends drank for too much and spent today recovering so the the picture is a good 24 hours late |
Here are other photographs from the last night of Birmingham iconic Rock Pub |
Its 2am and it is fanally all over for the Costers |
